Microsoft Releases Xbox One Videogame Console

Microsoft Releases Xbox One Videogame Console - WSJ.com: "Under the hood, the new Xbox is powered by Advanced Micro Devices Inc. AMD +1.49% chips, in a shift away from chips based on International Business Machines Corp. IBM +0.21% designs. The change makes the new Xbox more similar to Sony's upcoming PlayStation, making it easier to develop games for both companies' devices. But the two devices are also different in that Sony plans to offer a way for its advanced data centers to stream game images and button presses over the Internet to its PlayStation, allowing customers to play potentially any game instantly with a Web connection. That includes older games, which otherwise can't play on the new device. Microsoft didn't unveil that technology for Xbox One." (read more at link above)

Good software craftsmanship means working fast

Made in USA: "In software, paradoxical as it sounds, good craftsmanship means working fast. If you work slowly and meticulously, you merely end up with a very fine implementation of your initial, mistaken idea. Working slowly and meticulously is premature optimization. Better to get a prototype done fast, and see what new ideas it gives you. It sounds like making movies works a lot like making software. Every movie is a Frankenstein, full of imperfections and usually quite different from what was originally envisioned. But interesting, and finished fairly quickly. I think we get away with this in movies and software because they're both malleable mediums. Boldness pays. And if at the last minute two parts don't quite fit, you can figure out some hack that will at least conceal the problem. . . ."

New Miami Investor Groups

Meet Miami's newest investor groups | The Starting Gate: " . . . .“The panel was world-class and the discussion helped us all get a better grasp on the increasing availability of venture capital in the South Florida region," said Nestor Villalobos, founder of Arctico and a Miami Herald Business Plan Challenge finalist this week (at left). He believes South Florida is quickly emerging as "the place to be for startups across the country looking to start or grow their businesses.” Glen Surnamer, COO of Bookigee, said he too thought the area is hitting an inflexion point. “I think the Miami early stage scene is becoming more comfortable being Miami, rather than trying to be the Bay, NY, Boston, Austin, etc.  This is important because each of those scenes emerged organically out of very specific sociological, demographic and economic circumstances,” Surnamer said. “The point here is that Miami entrepreneur culture has to organically germinate out of the seeds that underpin us. This is clearly starting to happen.”. . . " (read more at link above)

Zynga announces Solstice Arena (mobile social MOBA game)

a "multiplayer online battle arena" title -- a MOBA game

Zynga announces Solstice Arena, a social MOBA coming to mobile | TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog: " . . . While it is a much more complicated game than a lot of Zynga's other offerings, Solstice Arena still makes use of social and freemium elements for sure. In addition to online matchmaking (for both skill and team setup, promises A Bit Lucky), there will be social hooks in the game, and the title will have a metagame in the form of items that can be leveled up outside of matches. There will be an in-app currency, and it'll be used to purchase heroes, buy boosts, and other outside of game elements. Obviously, the developers don't want the game to simply be pay-to-win, but this is Zynga we're talking about. While not everything is figured out just yet, it's not a stretch to predict there will definitely be no shortage of places in the app to spend real money if that's what you choose to do. . . ." Google Getting Serious About Gaming

Is Google Getting Serious About Gaming? Noah Falstein Hired As Chief Game Designer | TechCrunch: "Somewhat under the radar, Google has hired the computer games veteran Noah Falstein to the position of Chief Game Designer. Yes, that’s right, the search giant, not normally known for its games development, appears to have a major gaming project in circulation, at least something that requires someone as experienced as Falstein at its helm. What that might be we can only speculate. A Google Glass-related augmented-reality game seems a possibility, though there could be something even more serious going on, given Falstein’s areas of interest. . . ." Zynga?

What Will Actually Save Zynga? - Digits - WSJ: "Daily active users of Zynga’s games fell 8% sequentially and 21% year-over-year. Zynga’s monthly active users also fell: 15% sequentially and 13% year-over-year. Zynga’s average bookings per DAU is also declining, down 11% year-over-year. Some quick context: There weren’t any mobile game launches between “Bubble Safari” and “What’s The Phrase,” which came out earlier this month, but there are more are on the way. That can lead to a major drain on Zynga’s DAUs, who have proven to be very fickle gamers." (read more at link above)

Smartphones, Cameras, Game Consoles

Smartphones Sting Canon, Nintendo - WSJ.com: " . . . The emergence of smartphones—global shipments are expected to reach nearly one billion units this year—has reverberated across the technology landscape, crimping everything from personal-computer demand to music-player sales. The impact has been especially pronounced with digital cameras and portable game machines, where Canon and Nintendo are the biggest competitors. "Cellphones are cloaked mobile-gaming devices that you always have in your pocket," said Serkan Toto, a Tokyo-based mobile-games consultant. "You haven't seen anything yet.". . ."

Spaceport.io team moves to Facebook

Facebook acquires team, but not technology, of Spaceport.io

Mobile Game Engine: "After looking at Facebook’s mission of building best-in-class mobile experiences, as well as much internal discussion with my co-founder and mentor and YouWeb Incubator founder Peter Relan, our team saw a huge potential in working more closely with Facebook. With that said, today we’re announcing that the Spaceport.io team will move as a team to Facebook to make an even larger impact on the mobile world. Meanwhile the Spaceport platform will continue to be in capable hands supported by my co-founder Peter Relan and his YouWeb team. Facebook will not be acquiring the technology itself, so developers can continue to build and create apps, games, and content unimpeded and with confidence that Spaceport will be around and fully supported for some time to come."
